Shakyamuni Buddha asked, “If you bring a gift to someone, but that person refuses to accept it, then what happens?” The one criticizing the Buddha said, “I will take the gift back!” Shakyamuni Buddha said, “Likewise, I don’t accept the gift you have brought to me from morning to now. Please take it back!” So we Chinese understand it very well. We are not weak, or don’t know how to fight. If we are cornered, we will fight. But normally, we just mind our own business, our own affair, and our own family. We don’t want to start any troubles. We have the spirit of endurance. We have learned it from many places, such as Tao Tzu, Zhuang Tzu, and martial arts. Chinese martial art is very famous, right? But all the martial art teachers, or the real good ones, teach their disciples to use their skills to defend themselves, not to attack. They have to endure the situation until they can’t do it any longer. They have to endure whenever they can. It means that even if they have kong fu, they should not fight with others. Also Taijiquan. Many Chinese people practice Taijiquan every morning. But they don’t know the meaning of Taijiquan. It has a great influence on our spirit. We should know the essence of Taijiquan. What is it? When one reaches the highest level of Taijiquan, he will not hit others, but if other people hit him, they will fall.
