Would you like to know how the fifteenth Patriarch Kanadaiba was tested by the fourteenth Patriarch Nagarjuna Bodhisattva? And how did the sixteenth Patriarch Rahulata receive initiation from the fifteenth Patriarch and follow him in spiritual practice? Please listen to Master’s interesting story of the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Zen Patriarchs.

Our greed, anger and ignorance hide inside us, so if we are not scolded by Master, or if we do not interact with our fellow initiates, we will not know we have the tendency of anger, nor will we know ourselves or take medications to save ourselves or go to see the doctor. Therefore, we are tested now and then, sometimes once in a week, sometimes once a month, or every two or three months. All great masters should go through that kind of tests. Wood would not turn into a Buddha in a sudden, but through many times of carving, and polishing and painting or plating with gold, and then it can turn into a good-looking Buddha statue. If Master praises us and fellow initiates serve us everyday, of course we will not know ourselves, and we would think we are good. That’s why we should experience that kind of tests.
